Overview

The Ragamuffin was developed in the 1990s by breeders who split from Ann Baker’s original Ragdoll breeding program. They outcrossed Ragdolls with Persians, Himalayans, and domestic longhairs to create a broader range of colors and patterns while maintaining the sweet, docile temperament. CFA recognized the Ragamuffin in 2003.

Appearance

Ragamuffins are large, heavy cats with a plush, rabbit-like coat that comes in all colors and patterns, unlike the Ragdoll which has limited color options. They have large, walnut-shaped eyes, a broad chest, and a substantial body. Males can weigh up to 20 pounds. Their coat is dense and silky but resistant to matting.

Personality

Ragamuffins are docile, even-tempered cats that love being held and cuddled. They are trusting, often going limp when picked up like their Ragdoll relatives. They are patient with children and other pets and adapt well to various household environments.

Health Considerations

Ragamuffins may be prone to hypertrophic cardiomyopathy and polycystic kidney disease. Their large size means they take up to four years to fully mature. Regular cardiac screening is recommended.

Care and Grooming

Despite their long coat, Ragamuffins’ silky fur resists matting more than typical longhaired breeds. Weekly brushing is usually sufficient, with more frequent grooming during shedding season.

Diet and Nutrition

Their large size requires careful feeding to avoid obesity. Use the Cat Weight Chart and Cat Calorie Calculator to manage portions during their long growth period.
