Overview

The Peterbald was created in 1994 in Saint Petersburg, Russia, by breeder Olga S. Mironova, who crossed a Donskoy (Don Sphynx) with an Oriental Shorthair. The result was an elegant, hairless cat with the Oriental body type. The breed was recognized by TICA in 2005 and by WCF. They are named after the city of Saint Petersburg.

Appearance

Peterbalds are medium-sized, elegant cats with a long, lean Oriental-type body. They come in several coat varieties: bald, chamois (ultra-fine), flock (velvet-like), brush (short wiry), and straight (normal). They have a narrow, wedge-shaped head, large set-apart ears, and almond-shaped eyes. Their webbed feet are distinctive.

Personality

Peterbalds are playful, affectionate, and highly social cats. They are loyal and follow their owners everywhere. They are intelligent, vocal, and get along well with other pets and children. They are more active and dog-like than the Sphynx.

Health Considerations

Peterbalds need skin protection from sunburn and cold. Their hairless skin is prone to oil buildup and may develop skin irritation. They share some health concerns with Oriental breeds. Regular dermatological care is important.

Care and Grooming

Bathe regularly to manage skin oils. Protect from sun and cold. Clean ears weekly. Hairless Peterbalds need warm environments and may benefit from clothing in winter.

Diet and Nutrition

Hairless cats often need more calories due to heat loss. Use the Cat Weight Chart and Cat Calorie Calculator to manage their higher caloric needs.
