Overview

The Oriental Shorthair was developed in the 1960s and 1970s by crossing Siamese with other breeds to create a cat with the Siamese body type in non-pointed colors and patterns. They can come in virtually any color or pattern, resulting in over 300 recognized varieties. CFA recognized the breed in 1977.

Appearance

Oriental Shorthairs are slender, elegant cats with a long, tubular body, large pointed ears, and a narrow, wedge-shaped head. Their short, fine coat lies close to the body and comes in an enormous range of colors including solids, tabbies, bicolors, and smoke patterns. They have vivid green eyes (or blue in whites).

Personality

Orientals are highly intelligent, social, and vocal cats that demand constant interaction. They are agile, playful, and curious, often compared to dogs in their loyalty and trainability. They are among the most vocal of all breeds and do not do well left alone. They thrive with a companion cat.

Health Considerations

They share health predispositions with Siamese, including amyloidosis, megaesophagus, and crossed eyes. They may also be prone to flat-chested kitten syndrome and certain heart conditions. Regular screening is important.

Care and Grooming

Their short coat needs minimal grooming. Their primary care need is social — they require significant daily interaction and mental stimulation.

Diet and Nutrition

Feed a high-quality diet to maintain their lean physique. Use the Cat Weight Chart and Cat Calorie Calculator to prevent both under and overfeeding.
