Initially thought to carry a unique Rex mutation, subsequent breeding with Cornish Rex cats showed the gene was allelic (at the same location), producing curly-coated offspring. The Oregon Rex was eventually absorbed into the Cornish Rex breed and is now considered extinct as a separate breed.
