Overview
The Ocicat was created accidentally in 1964 when breeder Virginia Daly crossed a Siamese with an Abyssinian-Siamese hybrid and produced an ivory kitten with golden spots. Named for its resemblance to the ocelot, the breed was later developed with American Shorthair bloodlines for substance. CFA recognized the Ocicat in 1987.
Appearance
Ocicats are large, athletic cats with a distinctive spotted coat pattern. Their short, smooth coat features large, well-distributed spots in twelve accepted color variations including tawny, chocolate, cinnamon, blue, and lavender. They have almond-shaped eyes, a muscular build, and a wild, ocelot-like appearance.
Personality
Ocicats are loving, intelligent, and highly social cats with dog-like traits. They enjoy playing fetch, walking on leashes, and learning tricks. They are devoted to their families and do not like being left alone. They are confident and outgoing with visitors.
Health Considerations
Ocicats are generally healthy but may be prone to hypertrophic cardiomyopathy and pyruvate kinase deficiency. Some may inherit amyloidosis from their Siamese heritage. Regular veterinary screening is recommended.
Care and Grooming
Their short, smooth coat needs minimal grooming. They are active cats that need plenty of mental stimulation through interactive play, puzzle toys, and social interaction.
Diet and Nutrition
A protein-rich diet supports their muscular build. Use the Cat Weight Chart and Cat Calorie Calculator to manage their nutrition.
