German Rex

Overview

The German Rex was first documented in the 1930s in East Prussia and later in Berlin, where a curly-coated cat named Lammchen became the foundation of the modern breed in the late 1940s. It is one of the oldest Rex breeds, predating the Cornish Rex, and shares a similar curly coat mutation. The breed remains rare worldwide.

Appearance

German Rex cats are medium-sized with a rounded, muscular body that is less slender than the Cornish Rex. Their soft, short coat is plush and curly, with a velvety texture. They have round heads with well-developed cheeks, medium-sized ears, and large, open eyes.

Personality

German Rex cats are friendly, playful, and affectionate. They are energetic and acrobatic but less extreme in their activity level than the Cornish Rex. They bond well with their families and enjoy both play and lap time.

Health Considerations

German Rex cats are generally healthy with no significant breed-specific conditions. Their thin coat provides less insulation, making them sensitive to cold temperatures. Standard preventive veterinary care is sufficient.

Care and Grooming

Their curly coat requires gentle grooming. Avoid heavy brushing that could damage the curls. Occasional bathing helps manage oil buildup. Keep them in warm environments.
