Overview
The Donskoy (also called Don Sphynx or Don Hairless) was discovered in 1987 in Rostov-on-Don, Russia, when a professor rescued a kitten that lost its hair. Unlike the Canadian Sphynx, the Donskoyβs hairlessness is caused by a dominant gene. The breed was recognized by WCF in 1997 and TICA in 2005.
Appearance
Donskoys are medium-sized, muscular cats with wrinkled, elastic skin. They come in four coat types: rubber bald (completely hairless), flock (ultrafine down), velour (short wool that may disappear), and brush (wiry, often partial coat). They have large ears, almond-shaped eyes, and long, webbed toes.
Personality
Donskoys are friendly, intelligent, and playful cats that enjoy human companionship. They are social and get along well with other pets. They are active and curious, often described as having dog-like loyalty and trainability.
Health Considerations
Donskoys require extra skin care to manage oil buildup and are sensitive to sunburn and temperature extremes. Some may develop dental issues. The dominant hairless gene means breeding should be managed carefully to avoid homozygous complications.
Care and Grooming
Regular bathing every one to two weeks is essential to remove skin oils. Protect from sun exposure and cold temperatures. Clean ears weekly and provide warm sleeping spots.
Diet and Nutrition
Hairless cats have higher metabolic rates and may need more calories. Use the Cat Weight Chart and Cat Calorie Calculator to adjust feeding for their increased energy needs.
