Chartreux

Overview

The Chartreux is one of the oldest natural cat breeds, with roots in France dating back centuries. Legend claims Carthusian monks bred these cats at the Grande Chartreuse monastery, though this is likely apocryphal. The breed nearly disappeared during World War II but was carefully revived by dedicated French breeders.

Appearance

Chartreux are robust, medium to large cats with a dense, blue-gray double coat that has a woolly texture. They have a broad, rounded head with full cheeks that create a distinctive “smiling” expression. Their eyes are deep copper or gold, and their body is muscular and heavy-boned.

Personality

Chartreux are calm, intelligent cats that observe their environment with quiet attentiveness. They are affectionate without being clingy and often bond especially strongly with one person. They are excellent hunters and relatively quiet, rarely meowing loudly.

Health Considerations
