Burmese

Overview

The Burmese breed traces back to a single cat named Wong Mau, brought from Burma to the United States in 1930 by Dr. Joseph Thompson. Through selective breeding with Siamese cats, the modern Burmese was developed — a compact, muscular cat with a distinctive satin coat and an extraordinarily social personality. Today there are two variants: the American Burmese (rounder, more compact) and the European Burmese (more moderate, wedge-shaped).

Appearance

Burmese cats are medium-sized but surprisingly heavy for their compact frame — they are often called “bricks wrapped in silk.” Their coat is short, fine, and satin-like with a glossy sheen that highlights their muscular body. Traditional colors include sable (rich dark brown), champagne, blue, and platinum, though European Burmese come in additional colors including red, cream, and tortoiseshell. Their large, expressive eyes are always golden to yellow.

Personality

Burmese are one of the most people-oriented cat breeds. They crave human companionship and will follow you everywhere, sit on your lap, and sleep under your covers. They are highly social and do not do well when left alone for long periods — a second cat is often recommended. They are playful well into adulthood, intelligent, and can learn tricks and games. They are vocal but with a softer, sweeter voice than Siamese.

Health Considerations

Burmese are generally long-lived (16-18 years) but can be prone to diabetes mellitus, hypokalemia (low potassium), and cranial deformities in some American Burmese lines. They may also develop oral issues like gingivitis. Regular veterinary checkups and dental care are important.

Care and Grooming

Their short, satin coat is extremely low-maintenance — a weekly rubdown with a chamois cloth or rubber brush brings out the shine. They shed very little. Focus care on dental hygiene with regular brushing and professional cleanings. Provide plenty of interactive toys and climbing opportunities.

Diet and Nutrition
